How to Tell When You’re Not Grounded

dandelionWhen you’re grounded you have full access to all your talents. You feel in the flow and things may even seem to come effortlessly. You’re able to get a lot of things accomplished in record time. You’re even-tempered and quick-thinking.

If you haven’t felt that way in a while, you might be ungrounded. Sometimes in my practice, I’ll see a client who has been ungrounded for such a long time that it has become their new normal. Their quality of life suffers as a result and it can take a while to get them grounded again. So identifying ungroundedness early on is really beneficial.

Identifying Ungroundedness

There are many signs of being ungrounded, but the most easily recognizable ones are:

  • Being clumsy, dropping things or bumping into things
  • Having “one of those days” when five crazy things happen even before you get out the door
  • Having difficulty concentrating, reading or following a conversation, TV show or movie
  • Having to do the same thing over and over again because you’re just not getting it done right or being super-busy but not getting anything accomplished
  • Feeling out of place, easily offended, or spaced-out
  • Misplacing or losing things
  • Missing appointments

If you have three of the above “symptoms” going on, you’re probably either not grounded or you’re headed that way.

How Does This Crazy Thing Happen?

You can become ungrounded following a period of stress or illness, a highly emotional situation (even a positive one) or from an accident. If the body becomes an uncomfortable place to be, some people just naturally withdraw energetically. If that happens, you’re out of alignment with the body and ungrounded.

Coming Back Into Balance

There are a number of things you can do to get grounded again. Having an energy medicine session with a competent practitioner is one way. But there are also things you can do on your own. There’s a visualization I often go through with clients. It involves seeing roots with your mind’s eye as they move deeply into the earth from the bottoms of your feet. Once they are deeply imbedded in the earth, see and feel your body pulling up earth energies through the roots. Be sure to include the energy of the earth itself as well as energies from minerals, precious gems and metals, and sacred places. Feel the energy as it moves into your body and brings a feeling of peace and completion. It’s better to do this outdoors if you can, and it’s super to do it while leaning against a tree.

There are also essential oils that can help you. Grounding oils include Spruce, Rosewood, Cinnamon, Sage, Clove, Coriander, Lavender, Patchouli, Chamomile, Sandalwood and Vetiver.  There’s a root chakra oil available exclusively at Holistic Health Cleveland that’s a blend of six different essential oils that aids in grounding. Those more sensitive can feel an immediate change when applying it.

If you have been ungrounded for a while or tend to unground easily, you may benefit from wearing a garnet or hematite ankle bracelet. Other stones good for grounding include Kyanite, Tourmaline, Black Diopside, Red Jasper, Green Moss Agate, Smokey Quartz.

Salt is grounding also. A good long soak in sea salt, Epsom salt or both will help ground the body. Plus it just makes you feel really, really good!

Whatever it was that got you ungrounded in the first place probably can’t be fully dealt with if you’re out of your body. So if you think you’re ungrounded, consider grounding as the first step in your healing journey.
